In the XIX. In the second half of the 19th century, in Germany, in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, furniture was not enriched with new style elements. We can find their formal worlds and decorative elements among the stylistic elements of earlier eras (Renaissance, Baroque, Gothic, Romanesque ...). Yet their robust, castle-like structure and rich decoration distinguish them well from furniture from other eras, historicist neo-furniture made in other parts of Europe at the same time.

In addition to neo-styles that faithfully imitate the elements of each style, the furniture of the time was shaped by an eclectic mix of the world of forms and decorative elements of different styles. On the Italian and French furniture we find several baroque, rococo elements with slimmer basic forms. The German and Austrian furniture of the period is characterized by Renaissance, Gothic and Romanesque style elements (Old German furniture).

Building on simple but articulated basic forms, the raw material of the richly decorated carvings is typically solid oak, possibly oak veneer, garden walnuts are very rare.

Folk furniture made of less noble (pine) materials with a simpler decoration, modeled on Old German furniture, is called "peasant furniture" by many.
