Retro style furniture

The retro style is a nostalgic recollection of the 50s, 60s, 70s. Observable human, our tastes are most influenced by the experiences we have reached as adults. This is how we can feel at home listening to music from 30 to 40 years old, among our childhood furniture, but the elements of all recent styles become modern in our eyes, and the earlier ones become classic in our eyes.

In Europe, the work of Scandinavian designers has been gaining ground in furniture construction since the 1950s. Reconstruction after World War II consumed significant energies, so there was a demand for easy-to-manufacture, simple-line furniture. Designers have certainly drawn from the lines of art deco and the technical solutions of the bauhaus to be able to offer well-used, practical furniture at a reasonable price.

In Hungary, the forms of furniture are late and down, but they follow European trends. In retro construction, the world of design, which permeated the west in the retro times, and the quantitative approach that pushed the quality into the background in the production quality and use of raw materials, shaped the quality of our homes. Therefore, we are more likely to encounter high-quality furniture made of nobler wood 50-60 years old than 30-40 years old.

North America was much less endured by World War I, the time of the oil crisis, from the 1950s. Almost all human creations radiated material wealth in a euphoric mood. In addition to rock and roll, the pink Cadillac, many people from America jump into fast-food restaurants with chrome, red faux leather armchairs and aluminum-edged tables. At that time, pastel blue, green, peach, room or kitchen soap-patterned furniture appeared in homes.

Furniture that appears in the retro era is typically free of decorative elements and is basically practical. The playfulness of geometric shapes - if not on all pieces - can often be observed in the silhouette of chairs. The cabinets are rectangular, the visual element being at most the legs set on the head, with small spans. Futuristic elements appear in the design world of furniture. Practicality has brought metals into furniture production, we can easily get sufficiently solid frames, so a lot of furniture - mainly seating furniture is made with iron legs. In the 50's and 60's, almost without exception, the iron elements of the furniture were chrome-plated, and glass surfaces were preferred. The iron elements were typically treated later by powder coating (an electrostatic process that results in a highly wear-resistant surface).

Noble wood materials were often used as raw materials for the construction of the furniture, teak wood, mahogany, walnut (beech on standard furniture). It is not possible to meet the more characteristic design of oak and ash, so the furniture designers were able to direct their attention towards modern design. In addition to veneered furniture, pieces made of laminated chipboard to meet the needs of the masses appeared.
