Today the formation of our known lowland furnaces started in the second half of the 15th century. Of course, ovens have been used before, which is confirmed by the origin of the word; even in the pre-conquest, we came to our language through our afflictions with Eastern Slavs. Our conquering ancestors lived in yard-like tents and in dungeons deep in the ground. The latter had an inevitable consequence of a corner-mounted, small-fired furnace. The early furnaces were all heated from inside, ie their mouths opened into the room they heated. Such rooms were naturally smoky because the furnaces had no chimney.
