Thomas Chippendale Sr. (1718-1779) is a furniture designer named after the 18th century. century style of furniture developed in England.

Nowadays, the world of furniture has become more or less globalized, but hundreds of years ago, mainly due to transport costs, carpenters made the work of their hands unique not only in chronological order, but also in geographically separable style elements.

Until the 1800s, the styles of furniture were named here in Hungary according to the leading ideology of the time - just like the style trends of architecture (Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque ......) - in France they were named after their current king, in England typically a prominent designer was the namesake. In today's public consciousness, here in Hungary, similarly to England, Michael Thonet gained only such fame as to identify the furniture made with the technique and ideas he invented.

During the Chippendale activity, the Baroque replaced the Rococo, examining the shapes and decorations of the furniture, it would be forced to call the Chippendale style furniture Rococo, so the English approach is correct. Mostly XV. The atmosphere of French furniture born in the time of King Louis can give us back the atmosphere of Rococo.

By the 1700s, England, which already had a significant, well-functioning colonial empire, began supplying its carpenters with exotic trees (mahogany, ebony, rosewood) from its colonies in large numbers. Excellent carpentry raw materials can be produced from large cross-sections and homogeneous wooden structures. Chippendale was one of the first to recognize the potential.

In addition to the raw material of chippendale-style furniture, the basic ideas of the style elements used may also come in part from countries far from Europe (the effect of Chinese, Far Eastern furniture can be observed in the design of the pierced backrests of chairs). Several galleries offer Chippendale-style furniture that is a redesign of Chinese furniture, similarly to the models of the Herend porcelain manufactory, for example, tableware decorated with Chinese patterns.

Almost continuously to this day, they make period furniture using chippendale style elements.
